While there is no snow in the rest of the region, the scenes of white-covered nature in the grip of a hard frost show the severity of this year's cold. Despite no snow, Leitrim Monaghan, Cavan Mullingar and surrounding areas were also frozen. Most areas are colder than last year.
Forecasters say very cold temperatures will continue into the weekend. Dense freezing fog is expected to form in parts, affecting visibility. Widespread heavy snow and cold are expected, with minimum temperatures ranging from zero to -5 degrees. Temperatures will struggle to rise for most of Sunday as cold, sleet and sleet conditions persist throughout the day. Minimum temperature ranges from -2C to -6C.

Gardaí have advised drivers to take care on roads across Galway and Mayo as many are in icy conditions. Clifden and Letterfrack in Co Galway require special care. The 6.30am rain caused surface water to flow on the roads, which froze immediately.
Heavy fog in Galway city made morning commuters miserable. In the east of Galway, gardaí in Ballinasloe said many roads were in a dangerous condition this morning.
Similar conditions remain on roads across County Mayo, with the Road Safety Authority advising people to travel with care near Castlebar and Ballina.
