Dublin: Bus drivers have suspended evening services to parts of Dublin since yesterday in the wake of 'freak violence'.
A lady bus driver who was assaulted while operating a service in Tallaght West last month said she feared she would be raped or killed when about 40 youths stormed the bus. The female driver has been driving buses for over a year, but an incident last month in Jobs town, Dublin 24, now makes her feel unsafe at work. They support the drivers' move to stop evening bus service to West Tallaght after 6.00pm from yesterday and also support calls for a transport police.
“When I was waiting at the terminus at 6.00 pm last month in the winter, I received a call from the control center asking me to move out of the area, but when I tried to drive the bus, a man came up against me. stood on the road and in front of the bus," she said. Then a crowd of mostly teenagers, but a few older ones, crowded into the bus with the front and middle doors open from the outside, the back and the top.
Then the guy at the front of the bus got in and tried to open the screen next to me. Some of them tried to break the security screens protecting her. One was trying to pull down the window and I tried to hold it up even though it was locked. I was afraid of what would happen, because if I opened it, he could take me out and rape or kill me. He was very violent. Everyone was shouting around. Then another guy joined him and put his hands around the screen and hit me in the face with a snowball. They tried to catch me, but I don't know for what. They didn't seem like they were trying to rob me. They wanted to see me. They thought it was fun. Maybe it was because I was a woman and I was alone. She raised the alarm to contact controllers from the cab and Dublin Bus staff stayed in contact with her throughout the incident. Gardai were also notified.
There were other people at the bus stop but they couldn't do anything and I don't blame them. Most of the people got bored and left after a while,” said the bus driver. Gardaà are continuing to investigate the incident. No one has been arrested.
