The Chief Medical Director advises parents to be alert for symptoms of respiratory viruses in children as soon as schools and daycare centers resume operations after the Christmas-New Year holidays.
This statement comes after it has been confirmed that there are currently 838 patients on trollies in Irish hospitals today. Health professionals are warning that 5,000 new beds are desperately needed to cope with the pressures of flu season
The Chief Medical Director has advised parents to keep their children home from school if they show flu-like symptoms. As hospitalizations worsen, when children become ill, Professor Breda Smith advises parents to "watch out for others" and keep them home from daycare centers and school if they show new symptoms of illness. They claimed that the reopening of schools and daycare centers this week created a more conducive environment for the spread of respiratory viruses.

"Parents should continue to be considerate of others and, if possible, keep children home from school or childcare centers if their child has new flu-like symptoms such as congestion, cough, runny nose or high temperature.
"Children should stay at home for at least 48 hours after complete or significant improvement in symptoms." With over-the-counter medications, the vast majority of respiratory illnesses can be successfully treated at home. The HSE website undertheweather.ie offers some great advice, but parents should follow their instincts and get help if needed, the expert says.
The CMO advised people to wash their hands frequently, provide adequate ventilation and wear masks in public transport and crowded places.
