Dublin: Irish beef exports to China have resumed after a two-year hiatus. In May 2020, the supply of beef to China was suspended following the confirmation of an unusual case of BSE.
There are two types of BSE. One is classical BSE, which comes from eating contaminated feed, and BSE, which is thought to be present in very small amounts in all livestock, but only in older animals. The Department of Agriculture's surveillance program found an isolated and unusual case that prevented it from entering the food chain.
China's decision to resume importing Irish beef under the same terms as before is a vote of confidence in the quality of our beef industry's product.
Minister of State Martin Hayden and Agriculture Minister Charlie McConnell on Thursday welcomed the restoration of Irish beef exports to China. According to Mr. McConlogh, the issue has been a "high priority" for the past 2.5 years.
“Since the start of the suspension, my staff have been in constant communication with the Chinese authorities along with colleagues at the Irish Embassy in Beijing. They provided the technical data needed to evaluate the Chinese experts.
The protocol will now be in place to allow beef products from all Irish animals and it is critical that all Irish beef products qualify, the market opportunity is not limited. Irish beef exports to China were worth €96 million in 2019.
