DUBLIN: The Government has approved the participation of the Irish Defense Forces in the German-led EU battlegroup. This is the eighth time the Defense Forces will be part of this initiative and the first since 2020.
The military unit has a total of 2,000 personnel and is a two-year commitment. The military initiative will be ready throughout 2025 and respond to UN mandated interventions on a European basis.
The EU says they can respond to humanitarian crises and act as a rapid reaction force to deploy to a hotspot before a permanently stationed military unit arrives.
"Ireland's previous participation in EU battlegroups has shown that experience has enhanced the Defense Force's ability to work with other countries in a multinational environment and has helped to enhance the Defense Force's reputation as a reliable military capability provider for peacekeeping operations.
Minister for Defense and Foreign Affairs and Michael Martin TD said this was a welcome move to increase Ireland's involvement in overseas military operations.
