IRELAND: Opportunity for foreign teachers to register in Ireland

Dublin: The Teaching Council of Ireland is seeking to increase the number of registered teachers before it allows qualified teachers from outside the country to register and complete their induction in Ireland for a limited period in an effort to address the teacher shortage. Education Minister Norma Foley signed a regulatory amendment order facilitating the change alongside teaching council members.

Regarding the need for primary school teachers to be proficient in Irish, the Teaching Council states, “If applying for primary registration, you must have a primary focused (years 4-12) teacher education qualification that is comparable to the standard.

Irish Language Requirement (ILR) will be a condition of registration. Other teachers may register for a maximum of three years on a conditional basis to fulfill this requirement. The Irish language requirement (ILR) can be an aptitude test (The Scrudú le hAghaidh Cáilíochta sa Ghaeilge, which includes a period of attendance in the Gaeltacht) or an adaptation period (Oiriúnú le hAghaidh Cáilígeochita). Similarly, at post-primary levels, teachers must have a "post-primary focused (12-18 years) teacher education qualification equivalent to the level of Irish graduates, except for the history and structure of the Irish education system. A condition linked to registration) must meet at least one curriculum requirement.

The history and structure of the Irish education system will apply as a condition of your registration. But teachers can register on condition basis for maximum number of years to meet these three requirements. Since 1922. The History and Structure of the Irish Education System (H&S) exam is organized by the Teaching Council several times a year. The examination is designed to assess applicants' knowledge and understanding of the history and structure of education in the Republic of Ireland.

Applicants should have an understanding of key issues related to regulation and management of post-primary schools, curriculum and assessment in post-primary.

Applicants must have qualified as a teacher outside Ireland and completed an accredited teacher education programme, but do not have to complete a statutory induction period in that country. Teachers wishing to register in Ireland are required to complete an induction under the Droichead framework.
