Vatican: Health condition is bad Former Pope Emirate Benedict XVI is in critical condition. Addressing the faithful on Wednesday, Pope Francis said his predecessor remains very serious.
A Vatican spokesman also confirmed that his health had continued to deteriorate for the past few hours, due to his advanced age. A team of doctors is monitoring the situation.
Now he is 95 years old. Benedict XVI resigned 9 years ago. Benedict, in 2013 became the first leader of the Catholic Church in 600 years to cite advanced age.
At the end of the last papal audience of the year, he asked the people to "make a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict."
The Vatican announced that the former Pope's health had deteriorated in the last few hours.
"The current situation is under control and doctors are constantly following up," spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
Pope Francis was addressing a general audience at the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican.
Pope Francis has said that former Pope Benedict XVI is very ill and has asked pilgrims at the Vatican to pray for him.
