UK: The nursing strike for a salary increase led by the leading nursing unions in the UK is starting today and continue on December 20. Today marks the first of two days of strikes by thousands of nurses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland for better pay. Also, the walkout will take place on December 20.
Staff will however provide 'life support' and some emergency care, but routine services are likely to be disrupted in the biggest ever walkout of NHS nurses. "It's a tragic day for nursing, it's a tragic day for patients," says Pat Cullen, head of the Royal College of Nursing.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is calling for a 19% pay rise, saying below-inflation increases compromise care by making it harder to attract and retain nurses. The government says the RCN's demand is unaffordable and has followed independent recommendations on pay.
Most of the Indian nurses are not participating in the two-day strike. Nursing unions are against them. What angers the unionists who are part of the strike is that if the salary is increased, that benefit will go to the nurses who are not going strike.
At the same time, they respond that if the union had conducted awareness activities to tell Indian nurses the pros and cons of the strike, 95 percent of the Indian nurses would have participated in the strike. The RCN Union has clearly stated that there will be harm and benefits if they participate in the strike, but the truth is that Malayali housewives, nurses who are living only at home and family, have not tried to pay attention to those campaigns.
Intensive and critical care, pediatric accident and emergency and hospital neonatal units will continue to operate chemotherapy and kidney dialysis as normal. The biggest impact is likely to be on pre-booked treatment such as hernia repair, hip replacement or outpatient clinics.
