Dublin: The Health Service Executive plans to use all available resources - including previously degraded hospitals - to tackle the current overcrowding crisis. Official figures show hundreds of patients are still on trolleys waiting to be admitted to hospitals across the country. Meanwhile, pharmacies report shortages of over-the-counter drugs used to treat respiratory ailments.

The number of patients waiting on trolleys in emergency departments last night was 535. The number of people who are hospitalized due to covid is 577. According to figures from the HSE today, the number of people waiting in acute hospitals, including children's hospitals, is 260. This compares to 398 at the same time yesterday. Figures taken at 8am were 71% higher than on this day last year.

The most Overcrowded hospitals today are:

  • Cork University Hospital, where 23 people are waiting
  • St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, where 20 people are waiting
  • University Hospital Sligo with 19 people waiting.

The HSE has been asked to approve the treatment of some cases at Roscommon Hospital to ease the pressure on emergency departments in the region.

Denis Naughton TD says it is essential to use the staff and facilities at Roscommon Hospital to deal with the crisis. Independent TD Denis Naughton said the hospital's Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) could provide care for a range of illnesses and could be used to reduce waiting times in EDs in Sligo, Mayo and Ballinasloe. Deputy Naughton defected from Fine Gael 12 years ago in a row over the decision to downgrade Roscommon Hospital and close the ED there, winning as an independent candidate in subsequent elections. Since the closure of the ED in 2011, the injury unit has been functioning at the hospital.

His words came after the HSE and the National Ambulance Service agreed a protocol to allow the assessment unit in Ennis to be used for a similar purpose. From next Monday, the MAU at Ennis Hospital will be used to treat some of the patients normally brought to University Hospital Limerick. Paramedics responding to 999 calls will assess patients and then consult with doctors in Ennis to determine if their conditions meet the clinical criteria for treatment there. The initiative will run between 8 am and 6.00 pm when the MAU is open. It is being run on a pilot basis.

The HSE urged people to consider options other than the emergency department where possible, such as making an appointment with a GP or visiting a minor injuries clinic. However, some concerns are also being expressed about delays in GP visits during this current health crisis.

Denis McCauley, a Donegal GP and chairman of the IMO GP committee, said he was concerned people were being sent to hospital because they thought they were not going to get the care they deserved. This is sad and worrisome, he added. "That's not an indictment against our colleagues and nurses in the hospital. If you have someone sitting in a chair for 40 hours, their health outcomes are not going to be the same as in the ward. So you send. Someone is admitted to the hospital because you can't take care of them, but you know their care isn't going to be good enough.

Peadar Gilligan, a consultant in emergency medicine at Beaumont Hospital, said patients were receiving treatment "not the way any of us would want it to be delivered" because they were sitting in chairs at the nurses' station or on trolleys in the assessment area. Another patient lamented that I had to sit for 57 hours with my coat on, a pillow and an oxygen bottle. A GP says that if the current situation continues, 5000 beds will be needed.
