IRELAND: The Health Service Executive and garda have issued a warning on packed candies that may contain synthetic marijuana. The jellies were discovered during a search operation in Clonmel, County Tipperary, according to the Garda.
According to a statement from the HSE, many persons were sent to hospitals in the Tipperary region last month after consuming jellies that contained "novel and dangerous chemicals known as synthetic cannabinoids."
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, is said to be the inspiration for synthetic cannabinoids, which are synthetic substances created to mimic its effects.
However, many products include a synthetic cannabinoid instead of THC, "which will generate similar, more intense effects."
The HSE has also voiced worry about the presence of synthetic cannabinoids in edibles, vape liquid/oil, herbal (plant material), and other THC products being sold in Ireland.
Forensic Science Ireland recently examined a variety of items that had been confiscated and discovered that they did not contain any THC as claimed on the packaging, but instead just brand-new, extremely dangerous synthetic cannabinoids.
Dizziness, confusion, abnormal sweating, respiratory problems (difficulty breathing or lack of breathing), chest pain/rapid heartbeat, nausea and vomiting, agitation, aggression, psychotic behaviour, hallucinations, delusions, seizures or fits, and a sudden loss of consciousness are among the symptoms of synthetic cannabinoid exposure that the HSE is warning people about.
It said that the THC edibles now being sold illegally in Ireland carry a significant risk. It advised users to seek medical attention if they or a loved one experienced an unanticipated side effect or fell ill physically or emotionally after using the drug.
Today 6th January 2023, the HSE National Social Inclusion Office has issued a risk communication on cannabis jellies adulterated with synthetic cannabinoids in Ireland.Find out more on our site here: https://t.co/nsjFoyfLSC pic.twitter.com/svgjdn1dIp— HSE Drugs.ie (@drugsdotie) January 6, 2023
