UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to make mathematics compulsory for students

In an effort to combat illiteracy and ensure that the UK rivals the greatest educational systems in the world, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce plans for all pupils in England to study arithmetic up until the age of 18. According to a story by The Independent, he is anticipated to make the revelation in his first speech of the year. In his lecture, he will issue a warning that employers of the future must be prepared for more demand for analytical abilities.

He will also point out that, unlike many other countries, just half of the students aged 16 to 19-year-old study maths. Sunak's focus on numeracy is part of his vision to help create a better future for Britain.

PM plan for compulsory maths involves students taking some form of the subject alongside others. This will mean that maths to 18 will be provided through different routes rather than just A-levels (Advanced Level qualifications). A-Levels are a UK subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above.

According to sources in Sunak's office, Sunak would say in his address, "This is personal for me. The education I was so lucky to get served as the foundation for every chance I've had in life. And it's the main reason I entered politics: to ensure that every child receives the best education possible.

He will also draw attention to the growing importance of analytics and statistics. Only half of all 16 to 19-year-olds currently learn any math at all. However, the careers of our children will require more analytical abilities than ever before in a world where data is pervasive and statistics underpin every profession. We are failing our children if we send them into the world without such abilities.

The legislation, which would only be applicable to students in England, probably won't be implemented until after the upcoming election. Right now, surveys are pointing to a Conservative defeat to the Labour party.

Sunak's attention to numeracy comes as data from the government indicates that roughly 8 million individuals in England have numeracy abilities comparable to those of kindergarteners.
