Flu is a serious illness that can be dangerous even in children. The HSE is now seeing increasing cases of influenza in the community and is therefore encouraging parents of children aged 2-17 to get their children vaccinated. About 700 children under the age of 14 have been hospitalized with the flu this winter.
In Ireland, between 2009 and 2019, 4,750 children required hospital treatment due to complications from influenza. Of these, 183 people were admitted to the intensive care unit. 41 children died. These figures were reported by the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
The nasal spray flu vaccine is a very safe and effective vaccine that helps your child's immune system produce infection-fighting antibodies. If your child gets the flu vaccine and they are exposed to the flu virus, these antibodies will help them fight off the flu and reduce the risk of getting sick and needing to go to the hospital. The vaccination process is a simple nasal spray, where the vaccine is sprayed once into each nostril of the child. Getting the nasal spray flu vaccine is a safe, effective, and painless way to protect your child from the flu this winter.
